Look Cycle
Originally established as a company manufacturing ski bindings, Look discovered an opportunity to design and create a clipless pedal for cyclists. It was risky to move away from the standard toe-clip pedal popular at that time, but in 1984, Look successfully manufactured the world’s first spring-loaded clipless pedal.
The French outfit had immediate success in the cycling world with Bernard Hinault winning the 1985 Tour de France using the revolutionary new product. The technology would go on to set a new benchmark for pedals, and by 2000, the clipless pedal was in widespread use, not only on road bikes but track and mountain bikes too.
Although Look’s reputation was built on the modernization and engineering of the clipless pedal, the brand has continued to innovate for the road, creating its first handmade carbon road frame, the KG 86. The brand’s first foray into bike frames was an overwhelming success, with Greg LeMond winning the 1986 Tour de France aboard a Look branded KG 86 frame, solidifying Look as a revered name in the cycling industry.
Technology & Innovation
Since inception, Look annually invests 10% of company turnover into research and development. This means the French company constantly pushes the boundaries in the manufacturing of its carbon pedals and frames. The Keo Blade is a perfect example of this, modernizing the standard pedal by replacing the original spring loaded design with a carbon plate, increasing aerodynamics, widening the pedaling surface and reducing weight.
Ten years of research and development also resulted in Look’s most aerodynamic bike frame yet; the 795 Aerolight, the outcome being a bike that equal parts lightweight and aerodynamic, thanks to eleven newly patented technologies. The bike features a host of unique features such as the integrated “aerostem” which replaces a traditional step cap for a clamp, allowing the toptube to effortlessly flow to Look’s own single piece carbon “Flatbar” in one continuous line.
